How to Install and Splice the FCS2ZO-24-MPR Opticom MPO Splice Cassette
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and splicing incoming fiber cables to the FCS2ZO-24-MPR Opticom MPO Splice Cassette, including preparing the cassette and securing it into a compatible panel or enclosure.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, Scissors, Fiber optic fusion splicer, Fiber cleaver, Fiber strippers
Supplies needed:
Pan-Ty Cable Ties (PLT1M-M20WIP), 1/4" Phillips Screws (for Aramid yarn strain relief), Ribbon Splice Sleeves, Isopropyl alcohol, Lint-free wipes
- Prepare the Cassette and Observe Safety Warnings
WARNING: Unmated connectors may emit invisible laser radiation; maintain dust caps on unmated connectors. CAUTION: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces. Push down the Cover Removal Latch in the rear of the cassette and slide the Cover back until the 4 tabs clear to remove it. If equipped and necessary for splicing on the base, squeeze the two tabs on the Splice Tray inward to release and remove the Splice Tray from the Base. Carefully remove fiber ends from any pigtails coiled in the Splice Tray and set them aside.
- Prepare and Secure Incoming Fiber Cable to the Base
Strip the incoming fiber cable outer jacket approximately 20 inches (0.5 meters). Secure the incoming fiber cable to the Base using two provided Pan-Ty Cable Ties. Optionally, secure the incoming fiber cable's Aramid yarn to the Base using the provided 1/4" Phillips screw(s).
- Splice Fibers on the Base
Expose all fiber ends for splicing. Slide a ribbon splice sleeve onto either the pigtail or field fiber. Strip off approximately 1.375 inches (35mm) of coating from each fiber and clean with isopropyl alcohol. Cleave the fiber so that 0.400 inches (10mm) of bare fiber extends past the fiber coating. Do not clean the bare fiber after it has been cleaved, and do not let it come into contact with any surfaces. Splice all fibers according to your splicer manufacturer's best practice instructions and heat the splice sleeve(s). Route the spliced fibers into the cassette, ensuring they are located under the Base fiber retention tabs. Secure the splice sleeves into the Ribbon Splice Sleeve Holders in the Base.
- Replace Splice Tray and Splice Remaining Fibers (if applicable)
Replace the Splice Tray into the Base, ensuring no fibers previously spliced onto the base are protruding above the Base Fiber Retention Tabs. An audible 'CLICK' should be heard when the Splice Tray is pushed back into the Base. If splicing additional fibers on the Splice Tray (as indicated for 24-fiber ribbon cassettes like FCS2ZO-24-MPR), secure additional incoming fiber cables directly onto the Splice Tray if needed, then repeat the stripping, cleaning, cleaving, splicing, and routing steps for these fibers on the Splice Tray. Secure the splice sleeves into the Splice Tray's Ribbon Splice Sleeve Holders.
- Re-install the Cassette Cover
Re-install the cassette Cover by reversing the removal steps. Push the Cover forward until the Cover Removal Latch 'clicks' into place, ensuring it is securely attached to the Base.
- Install the Cassette into a Panel or Enclosure
Install the cassette into a compatible panel or enclosure. For front installation, snap the two grommets on the cassette directly into the holes on the front of the panel or enclosure. For rear installation, temporarily remove the Bezel by pushing the Bezel latch inward to release it from the cassette. Install the cassette through the rear of the panel or enclosure, then re-attach the Bezel and secure the grommets to the front.
