How to Install and Splice Fiber Optic Cables into the FCS29N-12-LAP Opticom LC Splice Cassette

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the FCS29N-12-LAP Opticom LC Splice Cassette, including preparing the cassette, splicing incoming fiber optic cables, and mounting the cassette into compatible panels or enclosures. Always maintain dust caps on unmated connectors to prevent invisible laser radiation exposure.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

#2 Phillips screwdriver, Scissors, Fiber optic cable stripper, Fiber cleaver, Fusion splicer

Supplies needed:

PLT1M-M20WIP 3.9” long Pan-Ty Cable Ties (Qty. 8), 1/4” Phillips Screw for Aramid yarn strain relief (Qty. 4), Discrete Splice Sleeves (Qty. 24), Isopropyl alcohol, Lint-free wipes, Incoming fiber optic cable

  1. Prepare the Cassette for Splicing

Push down the Cover Removal Latch in the rear of the cassette and slide the Cover back until the 4 tabs clear, then remove the cover. If your cassette is equipped with a Splice Tray, squeeze the two tabs on either side of the Splice Tray inward and/or pull the Base wall outward to release and temporarily remove the Splice Tray from the Base. Carefully remove any fiber pigtails coiled in the Splice Tray and set them aside.

  2. Prepare Incoming Fiber Cable

Strip the incoming fiber cable outer jacket approximately 20 inches (0.5 meters). Secure the incoming fiber cable to the Base using two provided Pan-Ty Cable Ties. Optionally, secure the incoming fiber cable's Aramid yarn to the Base using the provided 1/4” Phillips screw(s). Cut off any excess from the cable ties and Aramid yarn.

  3. Prepare Fibers for Splicing

Expose all fiber ends for splicing. Slide a splice sleeve onto either the pigtail or the field fiber. Strip off approximately 1.375 inches (35mm) of coating from each fiber and clean with isopropyl alcohol. Cleave the fiber so that 0.400 inches (10mm) of bare fiber extends past the fiber coating. Do not clean the bare fiber after it has been cleaved, and do not let it come in contact with any surfaces.

  4. Splice and Secure Fibers

Splice all fibers according to your splicer manufacturer's best practice instructions. Heat the splice sleeve(s) to protect the splice. Route the spliced fibers into the cassette, ensuring they are located under the Base fiber retention tabs. Secure the splice sleeves into the Splice Sleeve Holders in the Base. The Base has capacity for 12 discrete splice sleeves.

  5. Reassemble the Cassette

If the Splice Tray was removed in Step 1, replace it into the Base. Ensure no fibers previously spliced onto the Base are protruding above the Base Fiber Retention Tabs. Push the Splice Tray back into the Base until an audible 'CLICK' is heard. Reverse the steps from Step 1 to re-install the Cassette Cover, pushing it forward until the Cover Removal Latch 'clicks' into place.

  6. Install Cassette into Panel or Enclosure

Install the cassette directly onto the front of compatible panels or enclosures by snapping the two grommets into the designated holes. Alternatively, for rear installation, use your finger to push the Bezel latch inward to release the Bezel from the cassette. Install the cassette through the rear of the Panel or Enclosure, then re-attach the Bezel and secure the grommets to the front.
