This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Thomas & Betts Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector (SHC 3 thru SHC 8 Series) on electrical cables, ensuring a secure and properly sealed connection. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench (recommended), 5/16" allen wrench, 3/8" drive ratchet with an allen adapter
Supplies needed:
Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector (SHC 3 thru SHC 8 Series), Service cable or Feed cable, Silicone grease (included with rocket), Anti-oxidant compound
- Prepare the Connector Rocket
Identify the cable size you are using. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 rocket as shown in the product documentation. For the service cable, cut the CS4197 rocket as shown. Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to expose the correct wire range.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable, baring the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended, but not required, to prevent damage.
- Clean and Prepare Conductor
Wire brush the bare conductor thoroughly to break up any surface oxides. Apply anti-oxidant compound and brush it into the conductor strands to ensure optimal conductivity.
- Apply Grease and Slide Rocket
Wipe the cable clean. Apply silicone grease (included in each rocket) to the prepared cable. Carefully slide the cut rocket over the greased cable.
- Insert Conductor into Outlet
Insert the prepared conductor into the connector outlet. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing beyond the outlet.
- Position Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder of the connector. Continue sliding until the rocket butts firmly against the connector bar.
- Tighten Setscrews to Torque
Tighten the setscrews down onto the conductor to the specified torque. For wire sizes #12 to #2, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For wire sizes 1/0 to 350 Kcmil, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is recommended. If unavailable, use a 5/16" allen wrench or a 3/8" drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a 'T' handle wrench or 1/2" drive.
