This guide details the installation of Thomas & Betts SHC Series Flood-Seal mechanical connectors, ensuring proper cable preparation, connection, and watertight sealing. Installation must be performed by trained installers following all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Thomas & Betts SHC Series Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector, Electrical cables (service, feeder, street light as needed), Insulating rockets (for unused outlets)
- Prepare the Flood-Seal EPDM Rockets
First, remove the Flood-Seal EPDM rockets from the connector. Identify the correct rocket configuration (CST 3095 for Sweetheart Outlet or SHC 3830 for Feeder Outlet). Refer to the embossed markings on the rocket rings, select the proper rings corresponding to your cable size, and carefully cut them. Open rocket tower cut-offs only for the number of cables you intend to install initially.
- Prepare and Insert Cables
Remove the insulation from your cables; pencilling is recommended for best results. Slip the prepared Flood-Seal rocket over the stripped cables. Insert the service cables into the Sweetheart Outlet. If installing feeder and street light cables, insert them simultaneously into the feeder outlet.
- Secure and Seal the Connection
Tighten the connector's set screws according to the specified torque chart: 120 in./lbs. (10 ft.-lbs.) for #6 to #4 wire, and 240 in./lbs. (20 ft.-lbs.) for #2 to 350 MCM wire. Slip the Flood-Seal EPDM rockets over the connection and onto the shoulder of the bus until the sleeve butts against the connector bar, ensuring a fully insulated and watertight installation. For any unused outlets, cover them with the provided insulating rockets to maintain full insulating value. To re-install an uncut rocket, squeeze the barrel to expel air and assemble it onto the outlet shoulder.
