How to Install the R2T28M2T0240-B1 Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (Tape Shielded Cable)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T28M2T0240-B1 Ranger 2 shrink-fit silicone rubber termination on 28kV tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination application.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Soldering iron, Scissors or utility knife, Measuring tape or ruler, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)
Supplies needed:
R2T28M2T0240-B1 Silicone Rubber Termination Kit, Vinyl electrical tape, Terminal lug or connector, System ground connection materials
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Cable
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all kit contents for completeness, damage, and compatibility with your cable. Train the cable into its final position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, tape shield, and semi-conductive layer according to the dimensions specified in Table 1 and allowing for the terminal lug depth and growth allowance. Secure the edge of the tape shield with the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install Ground Braid
Wrap one band of the supplied sealing mastic around the cable jacket, 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch. Cut the mastic flush without overlapping. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and previous mastic, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension, and cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch (tighten) the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. For cloth or paper semi-conductive shields, overwrap with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.
- Install and Clean Lug/Connector
Verify that the termination assembly will fit over your selected terminal lug or connector. If it does not, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges. Clean the cable insulation with an approved solvent, being careful not to let the solvent touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-conductive shield and ensuring not to reduce the cable insulation diameter.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of the gray silicone rubber electrical tape (from the kit) around the base of the terminal lug. If the lug barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, do not exceed two layers of tape. If the barrel diameter is smaller, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its forward edge with the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue removing the core without pushing or pulling the termination assembly.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but do not lubricate the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Overlap the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extend the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel using a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
