How to Install the R2T28J2 Cable Termination
A comprehensive guide for installing the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables for indoor/outdoor applications. This procedure should only be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Measuring tape, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional, grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2T28J2 Termination Kit (includes termination, lubricant, tapes, mastic, gloves), Vinyl tape or binding wire, Silicone grease, Connector (if not included in kit)
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify the cable size fits within the R2T28J2 kit range. Train the cable into its final position and cut to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable according to the dimensions provided in the instructions, specifically 'A' from Table 1 (10.5 inches for R2T28J2) for the insulation shield cutback, and allow for the barrel depth of the terminal lug plus the specified 'X' dimension for exposed conductor length. Using 50% stretch, wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and press them into the mastic, then secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, using 50% stretch. Finally, wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension from the jacket end.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using a lug or connector that will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug onto the prepared conductor and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. Ensure you do not crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Thoroughly wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent to ensure it is clean. Be careful not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If an abrasive is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, avoiding the semi-con insulation shield. Take care not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the limits specified by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape (from the kit) around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter, otherwise, do not exceed two layers. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end, ensuring the termination body is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
