How to Install the R2T15J2-N0210 Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T15J2-N0210 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables for indoor/outdoor applications.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed), Vinyl tape or binding wire, Gloves
Supplies needed:
R2T15J2-N0210 Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Silicone Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Connector/Lug (Elastimold copper or aluminum recommended)
- Ensure Safety and Verify Components
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal. Install and operate in accordance with all individual user, local, and national work rules. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Confirm the cable size fits within the kit's specified range as shown in the Termination Selection Chart.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Train the cable into position and cut to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable using the dimensions provided in the instructions, accounting for terminal lug depth and additional conductor distance for aluminum lugs. Wrap one band of sealing mastic 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end with 50% stretch, cutting flush. Bend neutral wires back over the mastic, press them in, and secure to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and previous mastic, cutting flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using a lug that will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable *before* installing the lug. Do not remove the core at this time. Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to its specific directions. Do not crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only. Do not use abrasive on the semi-con insulation shield, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.
- Mount the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, build up the tape band to match the insulation diameter. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease over the edge of the semi-con insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the mastic seal's leading edge. Do not push or pull the assembly during core removal.
- Finalize Sealing and Grounding Connections
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but avoid lubricating the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
