How to Install the Ranger 2 Cable Termination (15kV & 28kV)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15kV and 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables for indoor/outdoor applications.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Vinyl tape, Binding wire, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer), Gloves
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Terminal lug or connector, Silicone grease, Cable Support Bracket (optional), System ground connection
- Ensure Safety and Verify Cable Compatibility
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Failure to follow instructions will result in serious injury. First, check that the cable size fits within the kit range as shown in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into position and cut to the length required for installation, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding connection. Prepare the cable using the dimensions shown in the instructions, ensuring to allow for the depth of the terminal lug and additional exposed conductor distance for growth during crimping of aluminum lugs.
- Apply Mastic and Secure Neutral Wires
Using 50% stretch, carefully wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end. Position mastic carefully as it serves as a marker for positioning the terminator; cut mastic flush without overlap. Bend neutral wires back over and press into the sealing mastic, then secure them to the cable jacket 4-6" (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and previously applied mastic, using 50% stretch, and cut flush without overlap. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension.
- Install and Crimp the Lug or Connector
If the chosen lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to its specific directions. Do not crimp the last 1/4" to 3/8" of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent. Do not allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive must be used, apply it only on the insulation, not on the semi-con insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Wrap a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug to create a track-resistant moisture seal. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, use tape to form the band equal to the insulation diameter. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step. If it's a lower termination with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it's flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body is butted up to the mastic seal.
- Complete Termination Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
