Overview

The ABB Ranger2 15 kV Cable Terminator (SKU: R2T15M4N2360) is a field-proven outdoor terminator engineered for tape shield, wire shield, or UniShield medium-voltage cables. This terminator accommodates insulation diameters from 4 to 2.10 inches (33 mm to 53 mm), covering a broad range of cable sizes (#2 AWG through 1250 kcmil) used in utility, industrial, and commercial power distribution systems. Designed for 15 kV class systems, the Ranger2 series delivers consistent performance in harsh outdoor environments, including temperature extremes, UV exposure, and moisture. Its non-tracking silicone housing provides superior weathering resistance and dielectric integrity up to the rated voltage, making it ideal for critical infrastructure such as substations, switchgear, and overhead line terminations. The terminator features shrink-fit technology and Elastimold’s pull-down jacket seal for reliable, long-term service with superior creepage and strike distances. Field-removable center core simplifies installation, while four sheds optimize performance in outdoor conditions. Optional insulating silicone sleeves are available for enhanced creepage or wildlife protection. The Type N2 copper 2-hole spade connector (rated for #2 to 1250 kcmil conductors) ensures secure mechanical and electrical connections, reducing installation time. Compatible with compressed 650 kcmil or compact 750 kcmil cables, this terminator supports popular XLP and EPR cable types. Its compact design allows efficient use of space in crowded termination areas, and field-replaceable parts support maintenance flexibility. Key electrical ratings include a maximum design voltage to ground of 9.5 kV, coronal extinction voltage of 13 kV (≤ 3pC), and lightning impulse withstand of 110 kV crest. The terminator also meets 10-second wet withstand of 45 kV, 1-minute dry withstand of 50 kV, and 5-hour dry withstand of 35 kV.

How to Install the R2T15/28M Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cable

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for installing the R2T15/28M Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination placement for 15kV and 28kV applications.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Crimping tool (for lug/connector), Soldering iron (optional, if solder block requires it), Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, optional), Gloves

Supplies needed:

R2T15/28M Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Silicone Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Electrical Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Vinyl Electrical Tape, Terminal Lug or Connector (compatible with cable), Cable (tape shielded), Scotch® No. 13 semi-conductive rubber tape (optional, for cloth/paper semi-con shields)

  1. Ensure Safety and Prepare for Installation

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Before starting, verify the cable size fits within the termination's insulation range as shown in the Termination Selection Chart. Inspect all kit contents for completeness and damage, and ensure proper fit with the cable and mating products. Have all required tools and supplies at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing for the depth of the terminal lug and any growth allowance for aluminum lugs (1/4" for 2/0-350, 1/2" for 400-650, 3/4" for 750-1000 Kcmil). Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, tape shield, and semi-conductive layer according to the dimensions specified in Table 1 and the provided diagrams. To prevent the tape shield from unrolling, secure its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.

  3. Install the Ground Braid

Carefully wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end, using a 50% stretch. Cut the mastic flush without overlapping. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic band, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension, and cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinch it after the final winding, and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. For cloth or paper semi-conductive insulation shields, overwrap the shield with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotch® No. 13).

  4. Install the Lug or Connector

First, confirm that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If it does not, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination onto the cable *before* installing the lug (do not remove the core at this stage). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8" to 1/2" of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges.

  5. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, not on the semi-conductive shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the limits specified by the kit.

  6. Install the Termination Body

Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, use no more than two layers. If the barrel diameter is smaller, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the cut-off. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully begin to remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue removing the core without pushing or pulling the termination assembly.

  7. Complete Sealing and Grounding

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but do not lubricate the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground and confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
