Overview

The ABB K151SR-C0240 is a 15/25kV 200 Amp Deadbreak Straight Receptacle engineered for medium-voltage cable terminations in industrial and utility applications. This deadbreak connector accommodates compressed stranded conductors ranging from 1/0 AWG to 2/0 AWG (53.49 mm²), with cable insulation diameters between 0.805 inch and 1.060 inch. The unit features an aluminum compression lug for secure, long-term electrical connections and is rated for deadbreak operation, allowing safe connection and disconnection under load without interrupting service. Designed for compatibility with industry-standard deadbreak systems, the K151SR-C0240 supports reliable performance in medium-voltage distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, and cable terminations where 15kV or 25kV class insulation is required. The compression lug design ensures low contact resistance and mechanical integrity, reducing the risk of overheating or failure in high-current applications. Key specifications include a continuous current rating of 200 Amps, a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 15.2kV (15kV class) or 26.3kV (25kV class), and a BIL (Basic Impulse Level) of 125kV. The fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing is constructed from 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials, providing corrosion resistance and environmental durability. A non-corrosive, capacitively coupled voltage test point with a removable protective cap enables safe voltage verification. The K151SR-C0240 is part of ABB’s Installation Products line and is designed to mate with compatible ABB deadbreak products, including straight plugs and tee splices. Note that required bails are not included and must be ordered separately. This product is ideal for terminating UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding, or other cable types when used with the appropriate ABB cable shield adapter.

How to Install the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, crimping the conductor, and installing the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle for high-voltage electrical connections.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Rag, Measuring tape

Supplies needed:

Approved solvent, Silicone grease, Elastimold bail, #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Sealing material for grounding wires, Solid dielectric type cable, Mating Elastimold product (e.g., 151SP/K151SP), Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) if required

  1. Prepare the Cable Jacket and Shield

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable: Cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are left for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable: Cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end. Remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 inches to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 comp./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  3. Crimp the Conductor Contact

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor. Ensure the conductor remains fully seated in the connector. Refer to the crimp chart for specific instructions. Start crimps at the crimp line on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Trim Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7 9/16 inches to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut. Do not cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent, always wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its instructions.

  5. Lubricate Cable and Receptacle

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle. Keep the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product.

  6. Insert Cable into Receptacle

Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. IMPORTANT: If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover. The shipping cover offers protection from dirt only and is not an insulating device. Obtain an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) if an insulating device is required.

  7. Connect to a Mating Plug

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), ensuring it is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail. CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  8. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
