How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
Comprehensive guide for preparing cables and installing the K151SP Straight Plug for 15kV and 25kV class systems, ensuring proper connection and grounding. This product connects solid dielectric type cables to other Elastimold products.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Collar, Silicone grease, ELASTIMOLD bail, #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire, Sealing material, Solid dielectric type cable
- Prepare Cable End
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable: Cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. Allow sufficient concentric neutral wires for connecting to a ground point. For Copper Tape Shield cable: Cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end. Then, remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Terminal
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. Do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent, from the cable end toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it according to its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Install Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful to the product.
- Insert Cable into Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail. CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Ground the Connector
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
