How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures for various UD cable types.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device (for 162LR)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Vinyl tape, Conductive copper tape, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kits), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires to ground), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Components

WARNING: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Verify all package contents are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit.

  2. Prepare Cable for Termination

Train the cable to provide 24 to 36 inches (610-914mm) of slack beyond the bushing centerline. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Depending on your cable type, remove the outer jacket and prepare neutral or drain wires as specified in the product documentation (e.g., remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of outer jacket for jacketed cables, or 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of copper tape shield for jacketed copper tape shield cables). Bind and fold back drain wires if present, covering ends with vinyl tape.

  3. Strip Cable and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align the contact threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor.

  4. Prepare Insulation Shield

Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the lug end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  5. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

WARNING: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (162LR only)

For 162LR connectors equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
