How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the K151SP Straight Plug. It covers cable preparation, crimping, assembly, and connection to mating ELASTIMOLD products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Pencil tool, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, Plastic Pin, Approved solvent, ELASTIMOLD bail, Silicone grease, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent, if needed)
- Prepare Cable Jacket (Jacketed Concentric Neutral)
Cut and remove the cable jacket a distance of 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are left for connecting to the ground point as required by the installation.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield (Copper Tape Shield)
Cut and remove the cable jacket a distance of 7-1/2 inches from the cable end. Remove the copper tape shield a distance of 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its appropriate installation instructions regarding outer jacket cut back.
- Prepare Conductor Insulation and Shield
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 compt./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart packed with the contact. Start the crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with a rag wet with an approved solvent to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its appropriate installation instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product. Keep cable insulation and plug clean.
- Assemble Plug to Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut while mating parts. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Ground the Connector (if no ELASTIMOLD device)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then, connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
