How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other electrical apparatus. It covers cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to a mating plug.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant, Inhibitor, Elastimold bail, Silicone grease, Mating plug, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents and components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cable Jacket

For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the end, allowing sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the end. Follow specific instructions for ECS or MA grounding devices if applicable.

  3. Strip Insulation and Conductive Shield

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 comp./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely; do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor.

  4. Crimp Conductor Contact

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated. Refer to the crimp chart packed with the contact. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  5. Clean and Pencil Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the pin end with a straight, smooth, “squared” cut; do not cut or nick the insulation. Pencil insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.

  6. Lubricate and Insert Cable into Receptacle

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing; do not substitute. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If not connecting immediately, replace with an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) if insulation is required, as the shipping cover is not an insulating device.

  7. Connect to Mating Plug Assembly

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an Elastimold bail.

  8. Perform Cable Grounding

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
