How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, assembling, and connecting the K151SP Straight Plug for 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all safety precautions are followed during installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug (includes Conductor Contact, Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant), Approved solvent, #14 AWG copper wire (customer supplied, if not using ELASTIMOLD grounding device), ELASTIMOLD bail (required for mating deadbreak products), Silicone grease (for mating receptacle)
- Prepare Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Cut and remove the cable jacket a distance of 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are available for connecting to the ground point as required by the installation.
- Prepare Copper Tape Shield Cable and Crimp Conductor
If using copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket a distance of 7-1/2 inches from the cable end. Remove the copper tape shield a distance of 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. Next, remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Remove Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its appropriate instructions.
- Lubricate and Assemble Plug onto Cable
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product. Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect Plug to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut while mating parts. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Complete Grounding Connection
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly as shown. Then connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
