How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized and follow high voltage safety practices.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant, ELASTIMOLD bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), ECS or MA grounding device (optional)

  1. Prepare Cable Jacket

For jacketed concentric neutral cables, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cables, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific outer jacket cut-back instructions.

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely (do not pencil). For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.

  3. Crimp Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Final Insulation and Shield Preparation

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it according to its instructions.

  5. Lubricate and Position Collar

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Refer to the bailing instruction sheet. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants as they may be harmful.

  6. Install Cable into Housing

Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  7. Connect to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).

  8. Complete Grounding Connection

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
