How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to one another or to electrical apparatus on 15kV and 25kV class systems. A bailing arrangement is required when used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Crimp Chart, Plastic Pin, Silicone grease, ELASTIMOLD bail, #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if product supplied with shipping covers)
- Pre-installation Safety Checks
Before starting, de-energize all apparatus. Install and operate in accordance with user, local, and national work rules. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Prepare Conductor Insulation and Crimp Terminal
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 compt./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut; do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as other types may be harmful to this product or its mating product. Refer to the bailing instruction sheet.
- Install Cable into Housing
Push the cable into the housing. Ensure the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect Grounding (Optional)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
