How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to mating receptacles.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Silicone grease, ELASTIMOLD bail, #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire, Inhibitor
- Prepare the Cable Jacket
De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.
- Crimp the Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent and rag, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may be harmful to the product or its mating product.
- Insert Cable into Plug Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect System Ground
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
