How to Install the Elastimold 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Measuring tape or ruler, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Silicone grease, Insulated cap (if not already on bushing)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) for completeness, damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Check the threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace any damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Cut the Cable

Train the cable as shown in the documentation to ease future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches of cable extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  3. Prepare the Cable End

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking extreme care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as indicated by the cable cut-back template, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be DE-ENERGIZED before lubricating or connecting. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Attach a hotstick tool to the insulated cap's pulling eye and remove the cap from the bushing. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, being careful not to place the elbow connector near a ground plane. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is NOT directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for a suitable sensing device designed for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or use of the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication on an energized elbow. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. Test with a suitable sensing device to determine if the cable is energized. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
