How to Install Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), UD Cable, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Vinyl tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Mating 25kV class 200ampere loadbreak bushing or accessory device

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Prepare Workspace

Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage, and verify component compatibility with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for free movement without resistance. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean workspace throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Cut the Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack (24 to 26 inches or 610 to 660mm) for ease of operation and neutral connection. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  3. Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield

Based on your cable type, remove the outer jacket and prepare the neutral, drain, or shield wires according to the specific instructions. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, remove the outer jacket 9-5/8 inches (240mm) back from a tape mark at the bushing centerline. For jacketed cable with drain wires, remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket, unwrap, bind, and fold back the ground wires, then wrap with vinyl tape. For jacketed copper tape shield cable, remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket and 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield, then wrap conductive copper tape over the end of the copper shield to hold it in place.

  4. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end. Cut squarely, taking extreme care not to nick the conductor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared edge. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  5. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after preparation. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so that its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  6. Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  7. Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  8. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
