How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, Insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
De-energize all apparatus before starting installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Ensure installation is performed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check compression lug threads by hand-threading the probe; replace any damaged components if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train and Prepare the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking extreme care not to nick the conductor.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after exposure. Install the compression lug onto the wire-brushed conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Remove the insulation shield as indicated by the cable cut-back template. Bevel the insulation end to a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared finish without cuts or nicks.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the copper wire tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Prepare for Connection to Bushing (De-energized)
WARNING: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Do not operate or connect the elbow by hand. All loadbreak products must be operated with a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool. Consult your company’s safe work practices for the required live-line tool length.
