How to Install 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation and initial setup of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various types of UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
261LR or 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral to ground connection, Elastimold cable shield or grounding device (if required for specific UD cable types), Cold shrink sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2, if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit)
- De-energize and Prepare Cable for Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Depending on cable type, remove the outer jacket (9-5/8" or 240mm) and/or copper tape shield (7-1/8" or 180mm). Unwrap neutral or drain wires and bind them back, or wrap conductive copper tape over the end of the copper shield. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8" (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor and ensuring the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8" (175mm) from the lug end. Bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8" (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to the ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions for completion.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized)
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this step. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2" (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
