How to Install 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures for various UD cable types.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutrals)
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation or removal. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts and cable. Check package contents for completeness and ensure proper fit with cable and/or mating products.
- Verify Probe and Lug Thread Compatibility
Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand. If resistance is encountered prior to full assembly, check for damage and replace the damaged component. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation (Step 1 A-D) for cutting, removing outer jacket, unwrapping/binding neutrals/drain wires, and applying any necessary sealing kits like cold shrink tube or copper tape.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8" (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor, positioning it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Prepare Insulation Shield
Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut-back template, leaving 6-7/8" (175mm) of insulation. Bevel the insulation end 1/8" (5mm) maximum. Ensure the insulation is straight, smooth, and squared, and do not cut or nick it. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Lubricate and Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant.
- Align and Tighten Probe
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutrals
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized)
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2" (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
