How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Hotstick (full insulated live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for grounding neutral wires), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Test point cap (for 376LR only), Silicone grease (for test point cap)
- Review Safety and Inspect Components
Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions thoroughly and gather all required tools, maintaining a clean work area.
- Train and Prepare Cable
Train the cable to ease future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut without nicking the conductor.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after exposure. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut-back template, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Prepare for Connection to Bushing
If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate the elbow by hand; use a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool for all connections and disconnections.
- (Optional) Perform Voltage Test (for 376LR only)
For 376LR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
