How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation and assembly.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- De-energize and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Inspect all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe) for damage, rating, and compatibility. Check package contents for completeness and verify proper fit with cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable (20 inches minimum beyond end of cable pad mount transformer) for ease of operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back. Remove shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per the crimp chart, starting at the mark and rotating 180 degrees for each crimp. Wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean insulation to remove all conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the neutral wires for proper elbow operation.
- Prepare for Bushing Connection
CAUTION: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. If the product was supplied with protective shipping cover(s), remove them and replace with the appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit.
