How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick (live-line tool), Wire brush, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Suitable voltage sensing device (for 168RLR)
Supplies needed:
167RLR or 168RLR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (silicone grease), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector
- De-energize and Remove Existing Livefront Termination
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable for Installation
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and taking care not to nick the conductor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Ensure the transformer and elbow are de-energized before lubricating the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Align the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
