Overview

This bi-metal compression lug connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.640 inch to 0.820 inch and supports conductor sizes ranging from AWG #1 to 1/0 (compressed stranded) or 42.41 mm² (solid). The extended contact and elbow housing provide an additional 8-7/8 inches of length, enhancing installation flexibility in confined spaces or when cables are trimmed too short. Designed for 15kV Class, 95kV BIL apparatus, the 168RLR-F-5230 meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 8.3kV and phase-to-phase voltage of 14.4kV. It delivers 200 Amp continuous and loadbreak current, with a 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close rating for 10 cycles. The fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing ensures reliable operation in harsh environments, while the non-corrosive capacitive test point enables safe voltage verification without cable disconnection. Key applications include repairing failed elbow connections, extending short cables, or converting live-front to dead-front equipment without replacing existing cables. The kit includes a 00400X bi-metal contact for reliable electrical continuity, a probe wrench (271-94), probe (166LRF), lubricant tube (82-08), installation instructions (IS-0417), hose clamp (65-27-2), and crimp chart (CC-0060). This repair elbow is ideal for utility, industrial, and commercial medium-voltage systems requiring safe, efficient loadbreak connections with test point access.

How to Install the Elastimold 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Measuring tape, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with product), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease

  1. Review Safety and Verify Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Verify all package contents are complete and undamaged, including the 168RLR elbow housing, compression lug, probe, probe wrench, lubricant, and hose clamp. Check component fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for damage; replace if resistance is encountered.

  2. De-energize and Remove Existing Livefront Terminator

Confirm the apparatus is de-energized. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare Cable for Elbow Connector

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to a length of 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Verify the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable; if greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Carefully remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and avoiding nicks to the conductor.

  4. Install and Crimp Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after stripping. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the lug for specific crimp information. Begin crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral and Ground

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation, tightening it snugly but without overtightening.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool, as specified in the operating instructions; do not operate by hand.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)

If using the 168RLR model, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following the manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
