Overview

The ABB 168RLR-H5230 is a 15kV, 200 Amp loadbreak replacement elbow connector engineered for medium-voltage cable systems requiring live-line maintenance. This connector is specifically designed to accommodate cable insulation diameters from 0.850 inch to 1.050 inch, making it compatible with AWG compressed stranded conductors from #1 through 1/0, as well as 42.41 mm² solid conductors. Key features include a fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing with 100% peroxide-cured insulation, insert, and jacket for long-term reliability. The connector meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and is rated for 15kV Class, 95kV BIL impulse withstand, 34kV AC one-minute withstand, and 53kV DC 15-minute withstand. It supports continuous and loadbreak operation at 200 Amps, with a 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close rating for 10 cycles. The bi-metal compression lug ensures optimal conductivity and mechanical strength, reducing installation time and improving long-term performance. A non-corrosive capacitive test point allows for safe voltage verification without system disconnection, enhancing maintenance efficiency. The connector is designed for hot stick operation and includes provisions for ground wire connection, making it suitable for use in switchgear, transformers, and other critical infrastructure. Its compact form factor and compatibility with standard cable sizes make it a versatile choice for both new installations and retrofits in utilities, industrial facilities, and contractor applications.

How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Hose clamp tightening tool

Supplies needed:

Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Preparation

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Failure to follow instructions can result in serious injury or death. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, proper fit, and compatibility. Read all instructions thoroughly and have all required tools and supplies ready, maintaining cleanliness.

  2. Remove Livefront Termination

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off and remove the old connector from the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Verify the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable; if greater, consult Elastimold. Carefully remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and avoiding nicks to the conductor.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Immediately wire brush the bare aluminum conductor. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the lug's contact threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using ONLY the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Connect Elbow and Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be de-energized. Connect the elbow and bushing plug using a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool, following safe operating instructions. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
