How to Install 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimping tool, Probe wrench, Wire strippers, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and De-energize Apparatus

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Verify all contents of the package are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. Read all instructions before starting and ensure all required tools are at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Livefront Terminator

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the existing connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches (26.7 cm) from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) from the end of the cut cable, proceed to the next step. Remove 1-3/8 inches (3.5 cm) of cable insulation from the end of the cable, ensuring to cut squarely and without nicking the conductor.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after preparation. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so that its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp information, starting the crimp at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease, ensuring no grease is introduced into the gap between the lug and the insulation. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Use a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool for operation. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)

For 168RLR models, perform a voltage test to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
