How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a 35kV class bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector housing, Compression lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, Silicone grease
- Prepare for Installation and Train Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all components for damage, rating, and compatibility. Read all instructions before starting. Train the cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CAUTION: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
- Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)
If using a 376LR connector with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or using the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
