How to Install 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 261LRJS (without test point) and 262LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors. These connectors are designed to terminate UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires and connect to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for operation, not installation)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), 3 Sealing Strips, Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector
- Perform Initial Checks and Safety Precautions
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Check contents of package for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions before starting and ensure all required tools are at hand. Maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.
- Train the Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. To facilitate neutral connection to the tank ground and hotstick operation, ensure an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire is available (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline). Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark at the bushing centerline. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Do not operate by hand. Use a hotstick for connection. Ensure the connector is clean and free of contaminants. Ensure the work area is clear of obstructions to allow for firm footing and a secure grasp on the hotstick tool. Maintain positive control over the movement of the loadbreak connector before, during, and after the operating sequence. If there is any question about the proper operating position, operate the connectors de-energized.
