How to Install the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides instructions for installing the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires and extruded insulation shielding, connecting to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick (insulated live-line tool), Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Mastic sealing strips (3), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. If supplied with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train and Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of future operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and mark it with tape. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches back from this tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.
- Prepare the Cable End and Install the Compression Lug
Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter, then cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing using a hotstick tool. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
