How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures for various UD cable types.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Hotstick, Wire Strippers, Measuring Tape or Ruler, Vinyl Tape
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing (261LR or 262LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD Cable (appropriate type), Copper Wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate Connector (for neutral wires), Cold Shrink Tube (optional, if using sealing kits), Conductive Copper Tape (optional, if using 200ECS-G2 kit), HV Insulated Caps or Connectors (to replace shipping covers)
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
WARNING: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components (elbow housing, compression lug, probe) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Check the threads of the probe and compression lug for free movement. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if the circuit is to be submerged or energized later.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions to: pull extra cable length (24-26 inches) and bind neutral wires (7 3/4 - 8 inches back) or connect neutrals to tank ground; remove the outer jacket (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacketed types); unwrap and manage neutral/drain wires, or remove copper tape shield (7-1/8 inches); and apply cold shrink tube or conductive copper tape if using a sealing kit. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline.
- Prepare Cable End for Lug Installation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable.
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow and Bushing Plug
WARNING: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
