How to Install and Operate 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation, preparation, assembly, and operation of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors for various UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Hotstick (Live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral/ground wires), Vinyl tape, Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS sealing kits)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection

WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your specific cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the detailed instructions in the documentation to cut the cable squarely, remove the outer jacket, and prepare neutral or ground wires. For jacketed copper tape shield cables, remove 9-5/8” (240mm) of the outer jacket and 7-1/8” (180mm) of the copper tape shield, then wrap conductive copper tape over the end of the copper shield to hold it in place.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, and bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

WARNING: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type tool; do not operate by hand. Consult your company’s safe work practices for the required tool length.

  7. Perform Loadmake Operation (Energized Connection)

WARNING: Loadbreak connectors must be operated with a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool. Consult your utility’s safe work practices for the required tool length. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing using the hotstick. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye and confirm positive control. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT CONDUCT LOADMAKE OPERATIONS ON KNOWN FAULTS.

  8. Perform Loadbreak Operation (Energized Disconnection)

WARNING: Use a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool. Firmly tighten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Without exerting pulling force, slightly rotate the connector clockwise to break surface friction. Withdraw the connector from the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion, being careful not to place the connector near a ground plane. Place the connector on an appropriate accessory device, following its operating instructions.

  9. Perform Voltage Test (262LR only)

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
