How to Install the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector with Jacket Seal on UD cable, including cable preparation and connection procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable stripping tools, Cable cut-back template, Hotstick (for connection/disconnection)

Supplies needed:

262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant, 3 sealing strips), Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector

  1. De-energize and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components, including the elbow connector, compression lug, and probe, fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for smooth operation; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches (61-66 cm) beyond the bushing centerline and place a tape mark at the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches (19.7-20.3 cm) further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the concentric neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable End

Use a cable cut-back template for dimensional guidance. Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip of mastic if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3 mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
