How to Install 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable, including cable preparation and assembly.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Cable cut back template, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing (261LRJS or 262LRJS), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic sealing strips (3), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, Vinyl tape

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Check probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component.

  2. Prepare Test Point (262LRJS Only)

If the test point cap is not installed on the 262LRJS model, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  3. Train Cable

Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. To facilitate neutral connection and hotstick operation, pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline. Place a tape mark at the bushing centerline.

  4. Prepare Neutral Wires and Cut Cable

Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  5. Apply Mastic to Cable Jacket

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic.

  6. Seal Mastic with Vinyl Tape

Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the neutral wires embedded into the first mastic strip. Use a third strip of mastic if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  7. Remove Insulation Shield and Insulation

Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end as per the cable cut back template, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor.

  8. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  9. Bevel and Clean Insulation

Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  10. Lubricate Elbow Housing and Cable Insulation

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime.

  11. Slide Elbow onto Cable

Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant.

  12. Align Elbow and Secure Probe

Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  13. Connect Grounding Wire to Elbow

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye.

  14. Seal Concentric Neutral Area

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down.

  15. Connect Neutral Wires to Ground

Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  16. Lubricate Mating Surfaces (De-energized Only)

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED.

  17. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Operate the elbow with a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to connect it to the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.

  18. Perform Voltage Test (262LRJS Only)

If using the 262LRJS test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the meter. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means.

  19. Replace Test Point Cap (262LRJS Only)

After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant supplied and replace it on the test point.
