How to Install 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

A comprehensive guide for the safe and correct installation of 261LR (without test point) and 262LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick tool, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

261LR or 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires

  1. Prioritize Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all components (elbow housing, compression lug, probe) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Check the threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Prepare the neutral wires or grounding braid according to your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) to facilitate connection to the tank ground. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield as specified for your cable type, ensuring not to damage underlying layers.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and carefully to avoid nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor and ensure the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut-back template, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing

CRITICAL SAFETY: Before proceeding, confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a fully insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
