Overview

ABB 262LRJS-D5260 is a 25kV, 200 Amp loadbreak jacket seal elbow connector designed for medium-voltage cable systems. This bi-metal compression lug connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.890 inch to 1.220 inch and terminates 3/0 AWG stranded copper conductors. The integrated test point enables safe voltage verification without disconnecting the elbow, improving operational efficiency during maintenance and fault diagnostics. The loadbreak design allows for hot-stick operation under load, reducing downtime in energized systems. The jacket seal feature maintains environmental protection and prevents moisture ingress at the cable interface. This connector is part of ABB’s Installation Products line, ensuring compatibility with industry-standard 25kV class equipment. Typical applications include utility substations, industrial power distribution, and renewable energy interconnections where reliable medium-voltage terminations are critical. The bi-metal construction provides corrosion resistance and long-term conductivity between copper conductors and aluminum cable shields. Installation requires standard compression tooling for the lug and proper cable preparation for the jacket seal interface.

How to Install 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and initial connection to a bushing. These connectors are designed to terminate UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires and extruded insulation shielding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Hotstick (live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Sealing strips (3), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Review

Check package contents and all components for damage and proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. Read all installation instructions thoroughly before starting. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Review all safety warnings regarding high voltage electrical equipment and hotstick operation. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) to provide adequate length for concentric neutral wires or grounding braid. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip of mastic if needed to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end according to the dimensional guide (7-3/4 to 8 inches from the jacket end), taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8 inches from the lug end). Bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DANGER: Do not connect two different phases of a multiple-phase system. Before closing a single-phase loop, make certain both ends of the loop are the same phase. Ensure the connector is clean and free of any contaminants. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to its pulling eye. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.

  6. Perform Voltage Test (262LRJS only)

Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter that is used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. DANGER: Contamination, moisture, dirt, etc., around the test point or use of the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication on an energized elbow. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with the supplied silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
