How to Install the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector

A comprehensive guide for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector with Jacket Seal on UD cable, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Hotstick, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic sealing strips, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate grounding connector

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

Check package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all installation instructions thoroughly. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators.

  2. Train and Prepare Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and mark the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable End for Connection

Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires; use a third strip if needed. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe excessive inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield (6-7/8 inches from lug end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the neutral wires for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing (Loadmake Operation)

LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Loadbreak connectors must be operated with a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing using a hotstick. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, avoiding ground planes. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (262LRJS Only)

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device, designed for capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the meter. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
