How to Install the Elastimold 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, neutral connection, and voltage verification for the 262LRJS model.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Hotstick, Cable cut-back template, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Suitable voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

Elbow connector housing, Compression lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), 3 Sealing strips, Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Grounding connector

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Check

De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating products. Check package contents for completeness. Verify proper fit of components with cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace if damaged. If installing the 262LRJS and the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline. Place a tape mark at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable for Sealing and Conductor Connection

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to avoid nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template (6-7/8 inches). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug (De-energized)

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. ONLY lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Connect the elbow to the bushing plug using a hotstick, following operating instructions. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (262LRJS Only)

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. WARNING: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
