How to Install the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector on UD cable, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimp tool, Fully insulated hot stick, Wire strippers, Suitable voltage sensing device (for capacitive test points), Wrench (supplied with connector kit)

Supplies needed:

UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease (for test point cap)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized. Inspect all components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace any damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work environment throughout the procedure. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to facilitate future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as indicated, beveling the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation free of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Install the Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the designated hold-down bracket on the elbow assembly.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to safely place the elbow onto the bushing. Never operate this connection by hand or attempt to separate it if energized.

  7. Secure the Elbow with the Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not require readjustment for future removal and replacement of the elbow.

  8. Perform a Voltage Test (Post-Installation Check)

If the Elastimold connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point, it can be used to establish if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
