How to Install the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector with Jacket Seal on UD cable, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
262LRJS Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Sealing strips (mastic), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate grounding connector
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury. Verify all package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.
- Train and Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and place a tape mark at the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches back from the tape mark. Unwrap neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the cable end squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable for Lug and Shielding
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and press them into it. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Final Cable Insulation Preparation
Remove the insulation shield as shown in the dimensional guide (6-7/8 inches from the cable end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.
