Overview

The ABB 162LR-D2270 is a 15kV, 200 Amp Loadbreak Elbow Connector designed for medium-voltage power distribution systems. This connector features a copper compression lug for secure, high-conductivity connections on conductors ranging from 270 - 4/0 AWG stranded/compressed, 250 kcmil solid/compact, or 107.20 mm². The elbow housing accommodates cable insulation diameters between 0.890 and 1.220 inches (22.61-30.99mm), making it compatible with a wide range of medium-voltage cables. A key feature of the 162LR-D2270 is the integrated test point, which enables safe circuit testing without system de-energization. This eliminates the need for temporary disconnections during maintenance or diagnostic procedures, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency. The connector is part of ABB's Installation Products line, engineered for reliability in industrial and utility applications. The 162LR-D2270 includes all necessary installation components: elbow housing, copper compression lug, probe, probe wrench, lubricant tube, crimp chart, V.D. Cap (peroxide cured), and installation instructions. The compression lug is available in copper (standard) or bi-metal options, with conductor size codes ranging from 190 to 270 for precise matching. The catalog number selection follows a structured process: Step 1 determines insulation diameter (code D for 0.890-1.220"), Step 2 selects material code (5 for copper), and Step 3 chooses compression lug code (270 for 4/0 AWG or 250 kcmil). This loadbreak elbow connector is ideal for applications requiring safe, reliable medium-voltage connections, including switchgear, transformers, and cable terminations in industrial facilities, utilities, and commercial installations. The absence of a sealing kit makes it suitable for environments where additional environmental protection is not required.

How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR (without test point) and 162LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Suitable voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate neutral wire connector

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Safety Checks and Part Inspection

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety. Inspect all package contents to confirm they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Depending on the cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral wires or shield according to the specific instructions for your cable type, including removing the outer jacket to the specified length (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacketed concentric neutral cable). Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (162LR only)

If using a 162LR connector with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate it with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
