Overview

The ABB 262LR-B5230 Loadbreak Elbow Connector is a 25kV, 200 Amp rated device designed for underground distribution systems. It accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.635 inches to 0.905 inches and supports #1 AWG stranded copper wire. The bi-metal compression lug ensures compatibility with both copper and aluminum conductors, providing reliable electrical continuity. The integrated test point allows for safe voltage verification without disconnecting the elbow, reducing downtime during maintenance or fault detection. This connector is part of ABB’s Installation Products line, known for compliance with industry standards for loadbreak separable connectors. Typical applications include pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground residential or commercial distribution networks. The elbow design enables quick installation and removal, minimizing labor costs in confined spaces. Rated for 200 Amps continuous current, it meets the demands of medium-voltage distribution systems where safe, loadbreak operation is required. The connector’s compact form factor and durable construction support long-term reliability in outdoor or indoor environments.

How to Install 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various underground distribution cables. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kits), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Vinyl tape (if using Jacketed Cable with Drain Wires)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

Check package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for damage; it should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Read all installation instructions thoroughly and gather all required tools. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Prepare the neutral wires or grounding braid wire according to your specific cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield cable) to allow for connection to the tank ground and hotstick operation. This typically involves pulling extra cable, binding neutrals, or removing the outer jacket and unwrapping drain/neutral wires. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a cold shrink sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2), slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first at this stage.

  3. Strip Cable and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the lug. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm), ensuring it is straight, smooth, and squared without nicks. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Connect Grounding and Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. (If the elbow is preordered with ground wire, skip this part). Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. Using a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool, connect the elbow to the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
