How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector on UD cable having concentric neutral and semi-con shielding.
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick, Suitable voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Check package contents, verify elbow housing and compression lug sizes fit the cable, and thread the probe into the lug to check for resistance. Read all instructions, gather tools, and maintain cleanliness. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.
- Train and Prepare the Cable
Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the template, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Assemble and Connect the Hold-down Bail and Neutral
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to safely place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure the Elbow with the Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation Verification)
To establish if the circuit is energized, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can give a false 'no voltage' indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
