How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper grounding wire, Appropriate neutral wire connector
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Prepare Cable for Training
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Failure to do so will result in serious or fatal injury. Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged, and all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation, typically 24-36 inches (610-914mm) beyond the bushing centerline. Prepare neutral or drain wires according to your specific cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric, or jacketed with drain wires) to facilitate grounding connections.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield from the cable end, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble Elbow Connector and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for about four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Grounding and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Lubricate and Connect Elbow to Bushing
DANGER: Ensure transformer and elbow are de-energized before connecting. Do not operate by hand; use a full insulated hotstick tool. CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a hotstick tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
