How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, assembling, and connecting 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to a 15kV class loadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Pliers
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Cleaning solution/wipes, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Optional: 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2, or 200ECS-G3 sealing kit, Optional: Cold shrink grounding kit
- Perform Initial Checks and Prepare Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all package contents and components for damage, proper fit, and compatibility. Read all instructions before starting. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation to remove the outer jacket, unwrap/bind neutral or drain wires, or remove copper tape shield. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, ensuring the cut is straight, smooth, and squared. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Consult your company's safe work practices for the required hotstick length. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing using the hotstick. Securely fasten the hotstick to the elbow connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing and immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
