Overview

The ABB 161LR-C5270 is a 15,000-volt, 200-ampere loadbreak elbow connector engineered for medium-voltage cable systems in utility and industrial power distribution. This elbow terminates 4/0 AWG compressed stranded or solid 250 mm² conductors with cable insulation diameters between 0.805 and 1.060 inches, providing a reliable interface for medium-voltage applications. The bi-metal compression lug ensures consistent electrical contact and mechanical integrity across temperature cycles, reducing the risk of connection failure in harsh environments. Its compact design eliminates the need for a test point, simplifying installation in confined spaces while maintaining operational safety. The absence of a test point also reduces potential failure points, enhancing long-term reliability in critical power distribution networks. This loadbreak elbow is rated for 200A continuous current and is suitable for use in 15KV class equipment, including transformers, switchgear, and pad-mounted transformers. The bi-metal lug accommodates both copper and aluminum conductors, offering versatility for diverse installation requirements.

How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed to terminate UD cables and connect to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Insulated Hotstick, Wire Brush, Crimp Tool, Wire Strippers, Suitable Capacitive Voltage Sensing Device (for 162LR)

Supplies needed:

161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes Housing, Lug, Probe, Lubricant), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Ground Wire, Neutral Wire Connector, Vinyl Electrical Tape, Conductive Copper Tape (if applicable for cable type), Cold Shrink Sealing Kit (if applicable for cable type), Silicone Lubricant (for 162LR test point cap)

  1. De-energize and Perform Pre-Installation Checks

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Confirm the transformer and elbow are de-energized. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components (elbow, lug, probe) are compatible with your cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness.

  2. Prepare Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure 24-36 inches (610-914mm) of slack for operation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket. For copper tape shield cables, remove an additional 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield and wrap conductive copper tape over the end to hold it in place. For concentric neutral or drain wire cables, unwrap and bind the neutral/ground wires, folding them back and securing with vinyl tape. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the end, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.

  4. Assemble Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for about four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Ground Elbow and Connect Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. If the elbow came pre-ordered with a ground wire, skip this step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: Re-confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized before making the final connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (162LR only)

For 162LR models, remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
