How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide outlines the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, covering cable preparation, compression lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures for various UD cable types.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Hotstick (full insulated live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug's crimp chart), Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type)

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Compression Lug (supplied), Probe (supplied), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; it must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. If resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Prepare concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire for connection to tank ground, ensuring extra length as per cable type (e.g., 24-36 inches beyond the bushing centerline for non-jacketed concentric neutral). Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable), copper tape shield (if applicable), and insulation shield according to the cable type and specified measurements (e.g., 9-5/8" jacket, 7-1/8" copper tape, 6-7/8" insulation shield). Remove 2-1/8" (55mm) of insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Bevel the insulation end 1/8" (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  3. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp, following the crimp chart packaged with the lug. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow and Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.

  6. Prepare for Connection and Perform Voltage Test (162LR only)

CONFIRM THAT TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. For 162LR (with test point): Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
