How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and initial connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers/Cable preparation tools, Hotstick, Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type)

Supplies needed:

161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD cable (appropriate type for the connector), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) for grounding, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Optional: Cable sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2, 200ECS-G3), Optional: Conductive copper tape (if using G2/G3 kit)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if any resistance is encountered prior to full assembly.

  2. Prepare Cable for Training and Neutral Management

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Based on your specific cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the detailed instructions in the documentation to prepare the cable end, manage neutral or drain wires, and apply any necessary sealing kits. Ensure an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire is available for connection to tank ground.

  3. Prepare Cable End for Lug Installation

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Complete Cable Insulation Preparation

Remove the insulation shield as indicated in the cable cut-back diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  5. Assemble Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Ground the Elbow and Connect Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
